Custom Shelving & Bookcase Projects
Custom shelving is built around a specific wall, alcove or storage need rather than assembled from a standard flat-pack product. Projects can include open wall shelves, fitted bookcases, alcove units, lower cabinets with shelving above or built-ins that integrate with existing trim.
Ready-made floating shelves use the separate Shelving Installation service, and flat-pack bookcases belong under Bookcase Assembly. This service is for work where dimensions, material choices and site conditions shape the finished storage.
Built-In vs Wall-Mounted Storage
A built-in bookcase is fitted to the room and may use fillers, trim or a base that visually connects it to the surrounding architecture. Wall-mounted shelves are lighter visually and rely on brackets, tracks or concealed supports.
The choice depends on what will be stored, how permanent the customer wants the installation to be and what the wall can support. Heavy books require different planning from decorative display objects.
Measurements, Loads & Wall Conditions
Accurate width, height and depth measurements help determine shelf spans and the number of supports. Wall material, stud locations, baseboards and out-of-square corners also affect how closely a fitted unit can follow the room.
The intended load should be discussed before shelf thickness and support spacing are chosen. Shelf dimensions and supports should match the planned residential storage load; no independent structural load rating is created by the installation.
Shelves, Cabinets & Trim Integration
Built-ins often combine shelves with lower cabinets, face frames or trim that hides small gaps at walls and ceiling. Those elements should be planned together so doors and drawers still have clearance and the unit does not block outlets or vents.
Where a project becomes a full cabinet installation or kitchen storage system, the dedicated cabinet service may be a better fit. Custom shelving remains focused on fitted storage and bookcase work.
Finish and Utility Interference
Paint-grade and stain-grade projects have different material and joint expectations. The desired final finish should be known before fabrication or installation so visible edges, filler pieces and fasteners are treated appropriately.
Outlets, switches, vents and data ports should not simply be covered by new storage. If those utilities need relocation, the electrical or HVAC work is a separate qualified scope.
FAQ
What makes shelving 'custom'?
It is sized or built around the specific wall or room rather than simply assembling a standard product.
Can outlets be moved for a built-in?
Utility relocation is separate work and should be confirmed separately.
Does this include flat-pack bookcases?
Bookcase Assembly is the better service for those.
