Window Casing and Trim Scope
Window casing covers the joint between the window jamb or frame and the surrounding wall. Interior work can include casing, stool and apron details, while exterior trim frames the opening against siding or other cladding.
This service is about finish trim, not the structural window frame, glass or operating hardware. Window Frame Repair and General Window Repair remain separate so a trim problem does not absorb the whole window category.
Interior vs Exterior Window Trim
Interior casing is protected from weather and usually focuses on profile matching, joints and finish quality. Exterior trim must also withstand moisture, sun and temperature changes and may interface with siding, flashing and sealant.
Identify which side of the window is damaged and whether the window itself operates normally. A simple interior casing repair is very different from exterior trim that has softened because of repeated water exposure.
New Casing vs Repair
New casing may be installed after window replacement, remodeling or an opening change. Repair work can replace a cracked, missing or deteriorated section while preserving the surrounding profile where practical.
Profile matching matters where new material meets existing trim. Paint-grade work is usually easier to blend than stained wood, and older profiles may require a close match rather than an exact stock replacement.
Stool, Apron and Corner Joints
Interior window stools and aprons create visible horizontal details at the sill. They need to align with casing and wall depth so joints remain clean and the window still opens normally.
Mitered or square casing corners should be adjusted to the actual opening rather than assuming the wall is perfectly square. Small gaps can be prepared for finishing, while larger movement may point to a frame or wall issue.
Rot, Gaps and Finish Boundaries
Exterior trim rot or repeated gaps should be evaluated together with the moisture path. Replacing the visible board without correcting a failed seal or flashing condition can leave the cause unchanged.
Painting, staining and extensive drywall repair are separate unless included in the project. If removal exposes frame deterioration, route the repair to the Window Frame service rather than covering it with new casing.
FAQ
Is window casing the same as the window frame?
No. Casing is finish trim around the opening; the frame supports the window unit.
Can exterior trim rot be repaired?
Often, but the moisture source should be understood.
Does installation include painting?
Final painting or staining should be confirmed separately.
