Laminate Flooring Projects
Laminate is commonly installed as a floating floor made from interlocking planks. This service covers new installation and localized repair where matching material is available and the surrounding floor remains stable.
Vinyl and wood flooring have separate services because their material behavior and repair methods differ even when the finished appearance is similar.
Subfloor & Underlayment
A floating laminate floor depends on a reasonably flat, clean substrate. Low spots, movement or debris below the floor can cause joints to flex and separate over time. Underlayment requirements vary by product and may be built into the plank or installed separately.
Moisture conditions should also be understood before installation, especially over concrete or in areas where water exposure has already damaged a previous floor.
Click-Lock Installation & Expansion Gaps
Planks need to lock together fully without damaged edges or forced joints. Perimeter expansion space allows the floating floor to move with temperature and humidity rather than binding tightly against walls or fixed cabinets.
Baseboards or transition pieces usually conceal those gaps. Do not trap a floating floor under fixed construction when the product instructions require movement.
Damaged Plank and Section Repair
Chipped, swollen or deeply scratched planks can sometimes be replaced individually, but access depends on where the damage is located and how the floor was assembled. Spare matching planks make localized repair much easier.
Water-swollen laminate often indicates a moisture source that should be corrected before new material is installed. Replacing the visible plank alone can leave the same condition active below.
Transitions and Moisture Boundaries
Doorways and material changes use transition strips designed for the floor height and movement requirements. Poorly placed transitions can restrict expansion or create trip edges.
Laminate is not the same as waterproof vinyl. Product moisture limits should be respected, and active leaks or wet subfloors should be addressed before repair is considered complete.
FAQ
Can one laminate plank be replaced?
Often, if matching material is available and access is practical.
Does laminate need expansion space?
Floating systems generally do, according to the product instructions.
What if water caused the damage?
The moisture source should be resolved before replacement.
