Finishing vs Installation
Drywall finishing begins after the sheets are hung. Joints, fastener heads and corners are treated so the board becomes a continuous surface ready for texture or paint.
Drywall Installation has its own service for measuring, cutting and fastening new board. Wall Repair is separate for localized damage.
Tape/Joints/Corners
Paper or mesh tape reinforces joints, while corner bead or similar products protect outside corners. Compound is applied in successive layers that become wider and smoother as the joint is built out.
Good finishing depends on the board being properly fastened and reasonably aligned before compound work begins.
Coats & Sanding
Several coats may be needed because joint compound shrinks and each layer has a different purpose. Sanding or smoothing between stages helps remove ridges without exposing tape.
Drying time should be respected rather than rushing heavy wet coats simply to finish faster.
Texture Options
Some rooms use smooth walls, while others use orange-peel, knockdown or another texture. Texture should be chosen before final finishing because preparation standards can differ.
Matching an existing texture in a remodel may require sample work and broader blending.
Smooth/Level-5 Finish
Very smooth high-light conditions can require more extensive skim coating than a standard paint-ready wall. A Level-5-style finish is a specific expectation and should be defined rather than assumed for every drywall project.
No guarantee is made for a premium finish level without confirming the requested standard and lighting conditions.
Paint-Ready Handoff
Once the wall is dry, smooth and cleaned of sanding dust, it can be prepared for primer and paint. Final painting remains a separate scope unless explicitly included.
Inspection under normal room lighting can reveal ridges or pinholes that should be corrected before the finish coat.
FAQ
Is drywall finishing the same as hanging drywall?
No. Hanging drywall means measuring, cutting and fastening the sheets. Finishing starts afterward and treats joints, fastener heads and corners to create a continuous surface ready for the chosen texture or paint preparation.
How many coats are required?
It depends on the joints, finish level and compound system.
Does finishing include paint?
Final painting is separate unless explicitly included. Drywall finishing brings the joints and surface to the agreed condition; after drying and dust removal, the wall still needs preparation for primer and paint.
