Door Projects Covered
This service covers common interior and exterior hinged doors when no specialty service is a better match. It includes new slab or prehung installation, doors that stick or sag, damaged jamb or strike areas, threshold and weatherseal issues, and general replacement.
Barn, pocket, patio/sliding, screen and pet doors each have dedicated services. Hardware-only projects also use their own service so the general door service stays focused on standard hinged-door work.
Repair vs Replacement
A door that rubs, does not latch or has a loose hinge may be repairable if the slab and frame remain sound. Widespread rot, major warping, severe impact damage or an opening that no longer fits the door may make replacement more practical.
The decision should consider the slab, jamb, threshold and weather exposure together. Replacing the door alone does not solve a damaged frame or water problem around the opening.
Slab vs Prehung Doors
A slab is the door panel by itself and relies on the existing jamb and hinge positions. A prehung unit includes the slab mounted in a new jamb, which can be useful when the existing frame is damaged or the opening needs a complete reset.
Slab replacement may require hinge mortising and latch preparation to match the existing frame. Prehung installation can involve trim, shimming and adjustments around the rough opening.
Jamb, Hinge and Latch Problems
Doors can sag because hinges loosen, jambs move or the slab changes shape. Latch problems may appear at the strike even when the hardware itself is functional. The repair should identify which part of the opening is causing the misalignment.
Minor hinge or strike adjustment can be appropriate, while split jambs or widespread movement may need carpentry repair. Hardware replacement should not be used to hide a larger frame problem.
Threshold and Weatherseal Issues
Exterior doors rely on thresholds, sweeps and perimeter weatherstripping to limit drafts and water entry. Worn seals can often be replaced, while a damaged threshold or sill may need more substantial repair.
If water is entering because of exterior flashing, siding or structural conditions around the opening, weatherstrip alone will not solve the source. Related exterior work should be identified separately.
Specialty Door Boundaries
Use the Barn Door service for exposed sliding tracks, Pocket Door for wall-cavity systems, Patio & Sliding Door for exterior sliders, Screen Door for mesh systems, and Pet Door Installation for a cut-in pet opening.
Use the specialty service when the project clearly involves a barn door, pocket door, patio slider, screen door or pet door. General Door Installation & Repair remains the best fit for standard hinged doors and mixed door-repair needs.
