Attic Stairs & Access Doors
Attic access can be a simple insulated hatch or a folding pull-down stair unit that combines a framed opening, door panel and ladder. This service covers installation of those products when the ceiling opening and surrounding framing are suitable for the chosen unit.
General stair construction, doorway widening and attic insulation have separate services. The attic-access service stays focused on the hatch or stair assembly and the immediate ceiling opening.
Existing Opening vs New Opening
Replacing an existing attic stair is usually different from creating a brand-new access point. An existing opening may already have framing that can accept a similar-size unit, while a new opening can require cutting ceiling material and changing framing.
Before assuming a replacement is simple, measure the rough opening and compare it with the new product. If framing needs structural modification, that additional work should be identified before installation proceeds.
Ceiling Height and Rough-Opening Fit
Pull-down ladders are designed for a range of ceiling heights and opening dimensions. A unit that is too short or too long for the ceiling can operate poorly even if the frame fits the opening.
Measure floor-to-ceiling height, rough-opening width and length, and the swing or landing space below. The stair needs enough room to unfold without hitting a wall, door or fixture.
Stair Unit, Hatch & Trim
The stair frame should sit square in the opening so the hatch closes evenly and the ladder unfolds without binding. Temporary support may be needed while the unit is fastened to the surrounding structure.
After installation, casing or trim can finish the ceiling edge around the opening. Painting the trim or ceiling is a separate finish scope unless specifically included.
Insulation and Air-Seal Boundaries
Attic hatches can become a source of air leakage when the panel or surrounding frame does not seal well. An insulated stair unit or separate attic cover may help, depending on the product design.
The installation can address the hatch and local weatherseal, but whole-attic insulation and air-sealing projects belong under the dedicated insulation service. No specific energy saving is guaranteed from one access-door upgrade.
FAQ
Can an old attic ladder be replaced with a new one?
Often, if the opening and ceiling height are compatible.
Does installation include creating a new framed opening?
That may require additional carpentry and should be confirmed separately.
Is attic insulation included?
No. Whole-attic insulation has its own service.
