Shower Tile Materials
Shower tile can be ceramic, porcelain, stone, mosaics or larger-format products, each with its own cuts, joint widths and finish requirements. Wet-area material selection should also consider maintenance and compatibility with the substrate.
General floor tile has a separate Flooring service.
Substrate/Waterproofing
Tile itself is not the primary waterproofing layer. The wall and floor assembly beneath it needs an appropriate wet-area system before tile is installed.
Loose tile, recurring grout cracks or water staining can indicate deeper substrate problems that should be resolved before a cosmetic tile repair.
Layout/Niches/Edges
Tile layout should be planned around corners, fixtures, niches and visible edges before the first row is set. Large-format material can make wall flatness especially important.
Trim profiles, bullnose or finished edges should be selected with the tile so exposed cuts are not improvised at the end.
Grout/Seal
Grout fills tile joints while flexible sealant is often used at changes of plane. Material choice and cure time should follow the selected system.
Grout repair has a separate service when the tile and waterproofing remain sound.
Repairing Loose/Cracked Tile
Individual damaged tiles can sometimes be replaced if matching material is available and the substrate remains stable. Repeated failure in the same area can signal movement or water below the surface.
Repair should not simply reattach loose tile over a failed wet-area assembly.
When Full Shower Remodel Is Needed
Widespread waterproofing failure, major pan issues or a complete change in layout can make Shower Remodeling more appropriate than localized tile repair.
Localized tile work is appropriate when the underlying wet-area system remains sound; broader failures may require Shower Remodeling.
FAQ
Is shower tile itself waterproof?
The full assembly relies on waterproofing below and behind the tile.
Can one cracked tile be replaced?
Often, if the substrate is sound and matching tile is available.
What if many tiles are loose?
A broader shower repair or remodel may be needed.
